Swedish DJ Avicii found dead aged 28

DJ Avicii has died at the age of 28, his rep has confirmed.

‘It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,’ a statement said.

‘He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th.

‘The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.’

The Wake Me Up DJ retired from live performing in 2016 citing health reasons.

He has worked with Leona Lewis, Rita Ora and Lenny Kravitz in the past.

In the wake of the news, DJs and musicians have expressed their shock and paid tribute to the hugely successful artist.

Calvin Harris tweeted: ‘Devastating news about Avicii, a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do. My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim.’

Marshmello wrote: ‘At a loss for words…Rest easy brother.’

Liam Payne said he was ‘devastated’ by the news, writing: ‘Oh my god truly devastated for Avicii very very sad news way to young … what a talent he was. rest in peace [sic].’

Dua Lipa tweeted: ‘Such sad news to hear about Avicii passing. Too young and way too soon. My condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.’

And Charlie Puth tweeted: ‘Wow, I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to the man who really opened my eyes as to what my productions could one day sound like. @Avicii was a genius and a music innovator, and I can not believe he is no longer with us. RIP to the very best.’

The DJ posted a message on his website last year talking about ‘the beginning of something new’.

He wrote: ‘WE ALL REACH A POINT IN OUR LIVES AND CAREERS WHERE WE UNDERSTAND WHAT MATTERS THE MOST TO US.

‘For me it’s creating music. That is what I live for, what I feel I was born to do.

‘Last year I quit performing live, and many of you thought that was it. But the end of live never meant the end of Avicii or my music. Instead, I went back to the place where it all made sense – the studio.

‘The next stage will be all about my love of making music to you guys. It is the beginning of something new. Hope you´ll enjoy it as much as I do.’

His last Instagram post dated 4 April was a picture of himself in a room with piano, and the caption: ‘It’s always sunny in California’.

The star had publicly detailed his battle with acute pancreatitis in the past.

In 2014 Bergling had his appendix and gallbladder removed. It came after he had to pull out of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival because of stomach pains.

He was replaced by Deadmau5 on the main stage. He was admitted to hospital in America and was told he had a gall bladder problem and ruptured appendix.

Tweeting after being in hospital overnight, he said: ‘It’s a routine procedure and all going well, I expect to be fully recovered and back on my feet in time for my US True Tour.’

In the same year, Wake Me Up became the most streamed song ever on Spotify. It was also apparently the fastest song to hit 100 million streams. Avicii had been nominated for the Grammy Award for best dance recording in 2012 for Sunshine with David Guetta, and again in 2013 for Levels.
